MOTOR TREND said...The new Raptor sure looks like the last truck, though it is significantly revised under that familiar sheetmetal. The most dramatic change comes in the form of two distinct, Raptor-only frames, the standard being the regular F-150 frame modified to accept the new five-link coil-spring rear suspension, and a second to accept the Raptor's optional 37-inch tires. It's more complicated than just clearance, however. Aside for new capacity for a full-size 37-inch spare, the 37 frame supports different shocks with trim-specific tuning. The 37-inch tires on our test truck limit travel to 14.1 inches out back and 13.0 inches in the front. Fox Live Valve internal bypass shocks provide ride control over the most outrageous terrain, with electronic damping that adjusts based on wheel position, even if the truck is airborneâin other words, jump that sucker. Or, uh, maybe dont, according to our legal department. With 35-inch tires, you can charge over small boulders and what have you with 12.0 inches of clearance. With the big-honkin' 37s, expect to clear Smart cars, parking benches, and small condominiums with 13.1 inches of air beneath your floor plan. Whatever you scrape on and subsequently destroy can be hauled to the dump with the Raptors 8,200-pound towing capacity. All this is wrapped in an F-22 Raptor-inspired body that is 6.0 inches wider than the standard F-150's. Ah yes, we can hear the eagle scream and the flap of the ol Stars and Stripes at the idea of a fighter-jet-inspired off-road truck. According to exterior designer Tom Liu, the new Raptor aims to inspire American power and might, so we expect each and every one of you to stand at attention with a burger in hand and apple pie on your face every time one of these buzzes by your home. It is a patriots duty, after all. .
